The Castle
Drawing inspiration from the residences of Europe’s princes, Christian IV created a Renaissance castle in a class of its own.
Before you scroll on, there’s one thing you should know. You can come inside! Frederiksborg is a magnificent castle and a museum with a wealth of things to discover. Behind its red brick walls, you’ll find grand state rooms and the Museum of National History, home to Denmark’s National Portrait Gallery. Our doors are open every day of the year.

Built on three islands in the Castle Lake
Frederiksborg Castle stands on three small islands in Hillerød’s Castle Lake. On the first island, along "Staldgade", you’ll find original stables and towers dating back to the first Frederiksborg Castle. On the middle island, the Neptune Fountain is surrounded by the Chancellery, the Castle Tower, the Governor’s House and a former carriage gateway that now houses the museum’s restaurant, Rabarbergaarden Slottet. The island is also home to the The Pantry and the Audience Building, which connects to the King’s Wing. The main castle stands on the third island. It comprises the King’s Wing, the Marble Gallery and two side wings, the Princess Wing and the Chapel Wing, which are linked by a lower terrace building. Frederiksborg Castle Chapel occupies two floors of the Chapel Wing.
