In Frederiksborg’s magnificent Audience Chamber, Danish scenographer Benjamin la Cour has created a captivating installation inspired by the Royal Danish Theatre’s critically acclaimed contemporary production of The Snow Queen, staged at Ulvedalene and Moesgaard.
H.C. Andersen’s The Snow Queen is a fairy tale about how evil can take hold—but also a story of hope, loyalty and the power of love to restore warmth and light.
At the heart of the Audience Chamber stands a monumental eye. Light, reflections and wintry atmospheres envelop the space, inviting you into the world of the story. Follow in Gerda’s footsteps through an icy experience as the Audience Chamber is transformed into the Snow Queen’s realm and H.C. Andersen’s timeless classic comes to life.
Alongside the installation, Valdemar Hall presents the original costumes from the production, the story of The Snow Queen through texts and images, portraits of H.C. Andersen from the museum’s collection, and historical objects connected to Denmark’s beloved fairy-tale author.
The Fairy Tale
The Snow Queen is a story of longing and belonging, of cold and warmth—and of the light that finds its way through darkness.
When Kay is struck by a splinter from a troll’s enchanted mirror, it pierces both his eye and his heart. His view of the world is distorted, and everything beautiful and good loses its meaning. Left behind is Gerda, who sets out on an unwavering journey to find her friend.
It is a story about losing yourself and finding your way home again—and about love’s power to melt even the coldest heart.
Step into the world of The Snow Queen at Frederiksborg from 31 October 2026 to 3 January 2027, and experience one of H.C. Andersen’s most beloved fairy tales, where ice meets light and hope never fades.
