Seasonal Activity 1 / 3

Explore the museum illuminated by chandeliers, candlelight, and flashlights.

As darkness falls and on cloudy winter days, the chandeliers at Frederiksborg shine! Experience the Castle Church, the Great Hall, and the Princess Wing on the 2nd floor, illuminated by chandelier light. Enjoy a magical walk under the chandeliers or go exploring the portrait gallery, historic scenes, and halls by flashlight.

A major part of Frederiksborg is cloaked in mysterious darkness throughout winter afternoons. Therefore, we switch to the after-dark edition of the museum as darkness falls – on cloudy days that might be quite early.

For safety reasons, our chandeliers are electrified, and candles are battery-powered.

Some corridors are nearly pitch black. Therefore, we recommend the use of flashlight for both atmosphere and wayfinding. Visitors are encouraged to bring flashlights/use their device light, or they can borrow one of our flashlights to light their way!

Standard Lighting

While most of the museum is bathed in the atmospheric glow of chandeliers and limited lighting, our special exhibitions and 20th and 21st-century collections on the third floor are presented under standard lighting during opening hours, ensuring that every detail shines through.

Blue Christmas

In 2025, the we present something truly special: Blue Christmas with Royal Copenhagen – a staging of the Christmas Plates in th Great Hall. Throughout the day, the light shifts gently across the installation. In the late afternoon, the grand chandeliers transform the former ballroom into an atmospheric setting, where 118 Christmas plates take over the space in a glass installation reflecting both the ceiling and the floor.
